I'm John Dachshah with my colleague Paul Gregory at the Hoover Institution, the author of his distinguished books of scholarship to do with Russia and other parts of the Soviet mysteries.

However, we're talking about a non-iate mystery, maybe.

There's Soviet Union in this story,

but Paul, as a young college student,

and his father and the Russian migrants, Russian origin citizens of Texas, gathered around the

Oswaltz to help them in the period after the Oswaltz had returned from Russia, where Lee had defected

and met Marina, a young Russian woman who didn't have English and and they together had then left the

Soviet Union and were told in despair and returned to Texas and here's where Paul enters.

Paul, as I recall, you were obliged by your folks to meet the Oswolds and you were recruited to help

Marina's English. I think it was the summer of

62 do I remember that correctly Paul? You got it right to June 62 they had just

arrived Lee and Marina were living They had just arrived.

Lee and Marina were living in Robert Oswells, who was Lee's brother in the house with the brothers kids and wife.

Lee needed a certification that he could speak English.

He thought he could get a, excuse me, Russian. He thought he could get a excuse me Russian he thought he could get a good job in Fort Worth

based upon his knowledge of Russian.

My father a Russian taught Russian in the public library was known as a Russian speaker.

They sent Lee to his office.

They talked, agreed that we'd get together because my father knew that I as a student of Russian would be

interested in in meeting someone actually from the Soviet Union which was a

rarity in those days.

And that's how we got together.
