I'm John Batchewith, Tim Jut of the Economist magazine, The Balkans Correspondent, who

publishes a piece that helps me understand the breakup of the Yugoslavia state at the

end of the 20th century and how these many decades later there are regrets, profound

regrets, opportunities for political advancement, allegations, memories of crises and massacres.

We come to the International Criminal Court because it exists for Yugoslavia and Tim's

statistics are that my memory here is there were a hundred and the hundred and sixty or so

who were indicted, 91 were convicted.

And both Ukraine and Russia are making allegations that are consistent.

Sometimes the word genocide is used, sometimes war crimes.

So can we expect that to be an analogy of the present Ukrainian war that it will come

to the courtroom at the hate, Tim?

Well, yeah, I just like to make a clarification here because there are in fact several

different courts in the hate and the UN Security Council in 1993 set up a special tribunal

for the former Yugoslavia, which called the International Criminal Tribunal for the

former Yugoslavia.

I mean, the international criminal court did not exist at that period.

So that came kind of much later partly on the foundations of the international, the

what the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the ICTY.

And before when I mentioned what Mr Putin had said in 2014, I was referring to the International

Court of Justice, that's the ICJ.

Now the difference in the ICJ and the international criminal court is that the ICJ doesn't try individuals.
