I'm John Batser with my good colleague Peter Berkowitz, the Hoover Institution, writing his column

Real Clear Politics, about a 4,000-word essay in the New York Times, the senior, senior spot

for any intellectuals in the country to write 4,000 words.

It's a great tribute to the trust that the editors in New York Times have in him.

And the item is titled Harvard derangement syndrome.

Now, what is to be done, Mr. Professor Pinker's complaints, other people's complaints.

What is to be done is stop hiring one

side of the ship. Is that hard for Harvard to come to, Peter, to say, we've got to stop asking

about their politics. We've got to stop creating disturbances when they don't agree with us.

Well, look, it was very easy for Harvard in the summer of 2020

when Claudine Gay was merely the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences

to say that the George Floyd riots have showed us

just how deep structural racism is in the United States.

And we've got to hire tens of millions of dollars worth of new faculty.

It seems to me that Harvard seems to me that was to misunderstand the problem. But if tens of

millions of dollars were ready then, I don't see why tens of millions of dollars are not

ready now, to do what Harvard needs to do, not to actually snoop into the political opinions of potential faculty,

but to find faculty who can teach subjects that students desperately need to know about,

at least students who pursue a liberal education.

I mean American political ideas and American political institutions.

I mean constitutional, diplomatic, economic,

religious, and military history. I mean the great books of Western civilization. I mean
