Kelsey Shelling was born in the small town of Hollyoke, just a couple of hours east of Denver, Colorado, to parents Laura and Doug.

When Kelsey was 11 years old Laura and Doug called the quits on their marriage and Laura took on life as a single parent.

Over the years, Kelsey and her mother developed a type bond and they were practically inseparable but Kelsey remained close to her father as well.

Kelsey was a young woman of deep faith and she was very spiritual as well.

She maintained a running list of her favorite Bible verses.

Her close friend, Ali Sandoval, described her as fun to be around.

She said that Kelsey was always laughing and they were always out to have a good time together, sometimes even getting into trouble.

After graduating from high school, Kelsey enrolled at Northeastern Junior College in 2010.

Here she was taking general courses in preparation for majoring in psychology.

She met a young man named Don Tay Lucas. He was from the central Colorado town of Webloo.

Lucas was a stand-out basketball player from central high school.
