If you're doing the Bible reading challenge, then you have been

reading Romans, which I've also been reading. And what a book. So wonderful, but I'm

going to pick out a couple of verses in chapter 12 to talk about very briefly today.

Verse 3, for I say through the grace given to me to everyone who is among you not to think of himself more highly than he

ought to think but to think soberly as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

Then verse 10 in honor giving preference to one another and

then in verse 16 be of the same mind toward one another do not set your mind on

high things, but associate with the humble.

Do not be wise in your own opinion.

All three of these verses are speaking about having an attitude of humility and chapter 12 is full

of admonitions of things to do but this is about being, not doing, of being humble people. It's not things to do, but things to be.

So, in spite of that, there's plenty of other things in chapter 12 of what we are to be doing and that's great

For example hate what is evil cling to the good, and many more.

But these three verses I picked out have to do with this inward attitude,

with this being.

We can do the outward commands like be given to hospitality, obeying verse 13, but God

looks on the heart and he knows how much we're thinking of ourselves while we are

serving others and how wise we think we are as we're doing it.

So this command to not think more highly of ourselves is not something that we can apply occasionally.

Certainly, hospitality is not something we do absolutely full time.

Everyone takes a break from cooking and serving, but this mindset is something we are to have accompanying
