Summary

In today's episode, Emily sits down with guest Ivory Hecker. You may know Ivory from a video that went viral world wide where she called out Fox News on air for not allowing her to speak the truth to her audience. She shares that the news station was withholding life saving information during a pandemic and would not allow her to report on it and that didn't sit well with her. Ivory is now an independent journalist, with her own website and YouTube channel where she keeps it real and uncensored. She is also a singer-songwriter with her songs on all music platforms. Ivory shares her experience as a new journalist just out of college, building her career, overcoming heartbreak, getting fired for calling out corporate media, and how she is led to stay authentic and keep it real. This is an episode you do not want to miss. Share with a friend!

start off by asking, give me a little bit of your background in journalism, maybe your education,

0:44.3

and what kind of got you into it in the first place? Yeah, I got my broadcast journalism degree

0:50.3

from Syracuse University and I wanted to get into journalism because of the power that information provides to people.

1:01.0

When people have the information they need to know what's really going on and to know what

1:07.0

will benefit them or hurt them, that gives them an immense amount of power to live their

1:12.9

lives the way that they see fit. So that's been the benefit of the free press throughout history.

1:20.9

And so I wanted to be a part of the free press and putting the First Amendment to use.

1:27.7

First job was at the Fox affiliate in South Carolina, Columbia.

1:42.0

And it was actually absolutely brutal. It was just

1:47.0

Was it? Yeah, yeah, TV news is really rough starting out. You really have to get through some

1:55.7

tough years before it starts to get fun. What makes it so tough? Is it the scheduling or the work you're doing?

2:03.7

Yeah, long, there were long hours, a lot of just figuring out the hard way,
