0:00.0 | This is Jocco podcast number one to 87 with David Burke and me, Jocco Willink. Good evening, Dave. Good evening. |
0:09.0 | In case anyone was wondering where Echo Charles is at this time, Echo is actually in Hawaii trying to get back in touch with Kaina, the land as we used to call it. |
0:27.0 | And he will be back in a few more episodes in the meantime. I got Dave Burke here who now lives in the AO of San Diego. |
0:35.0 | And if you don't know about Dave, he was on this podcast number 69 and number 135. He was a Marine Corps fighter pilot through the F-18. |
0:46.0 | He was a top gun pilot, top gun instructor, top gun senior instructor, F-16 pilot, F-22 pilot, F-35 pilot. |
0:56.0 | The first and still only one of a few pilots qualified on all those platforms. He was the first commanding officer of an F-35 operational squadron. |
1:07.0 | And on top of that, he was the commander of Anglico Salt 6 on the ground with us in the Battle of Ramadi. |
1:14.0 | And he and his team did scores of operations with TU Bruiser. And he is now with us on the team at echelonfront where he leads the long range leadership development and alignment program. |
1:32.0 | So Dave, thanks for coming on and filling in for echo. It's good to be here. Have you been brushing up on your video games and 80s and 90s movies? |
1:46.0 | Unfortunately no, I'm not going to be able to fill in for that. |
1:50.0 | Check, well actually it's a good thing that you do have the experience that you have and it doesn't have to do with Super Mario Brothers because I want to talk tactics. And it's one of my, I don't know, I wrote that it was one of my favorite Marine Corps doctrinal publications. |
2:07.0 | That's kind of a, that's really a big statement as if I sit around and grade which ones my favorite, but it definitely is up there. It is MCDP1TAC3 tactics. |
2:21.0 | So let's get into it. |
2:26.0 | How long, how long are you in the Marine Corps for Dave? 23 years. |
2:30.0 | And you retired as what, a lieutenant colonel? Lieutenant colonel? Check. Did you, so you went to the basic school? I did. |
2:38.0 | Did you guys cover this in the basic school? Absolutely. Actually, when I went to the basic school in 1994, it was the predecessors, basically the same pub, the one-dash-3 and a different, slightly different name, but pretty much the same stuff. |
2:50.0 | And I actually looked, this one is dated July of 1997. I looked for a newer one than there isn't one. This is it. |
2:59.0 | Yep. And it's interesting because you'll, everyone will see there's examples in here. They don't have examples obviously from Iraq and Afghanistan or Iraq 2 and then Afghanistan. |
3:10.0 | I'm sure at some point they will, they will do that because they got a lot of Gulf War examples. And I, you know, obviously they were just looking for some recent examples when they did it in 97. That was the last big war. |
3:26.0 | So there you go. But we'll get into it. And the book starts with a forward and because it's the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps, even when they write a forward, it sounds good. |
3:40.0 | So this is how it starts off. This publication is about winning in combat. |
3:47.0 | Is there any better way to start this manual? Nope. This publication is about winning in combat. Winning requires many things. Excellence in techniques and appreciation of the enemy, exemplary leadership, battlefield judgment and focused combat power. |
