Summary

Kanye West’s new album, named after his late mother Donda, was released on 29 August 2021 and since its release people have been asking me what I think of it and of his controversial collaboration with artists like DaBaby and Marilyn Manson. In this episode I take a look at what he seems to be trying to do with this album, looking specifically at one of his Chicago events and the song Come to Life, which includes Kim Kardashian in the music video. As you know I’ve been following Kanye West for a while, keeping an eye on his effects on culture and his conversion to Christianity. I’ve said before that he’s playing the role of the fool who is capable of bridging extremes in culture. In his own particularities he seems to be trying to reconcile many contradictions and bringing that into the symbolism of his music as well as in his collaborations. So Kanye West put out his album, Donda, finally.

0:03.6

As you know, I've been watching Kanye West for several years.

0:06.3

And since the album has been out, many people have been asking me whether I'm going

0:10.6

to give some kind of review of the album.

0:12.5

And people have been asking me, you know, why is Kanye West working with Marilyn Manson

0:18.7

and DeBaby?

0:19.9

Why is he, you know, producing little Nazex? You know,

0:23.7

why is he doing all these things if he's supposed to be Christian? What is going on? You know,

0:27.9

what is the meaning of some of his actions? And so I want to look a little bit at, again,

0:33.0

at Kanye West, at, you know, let's say his faults, his difficulties, and also what it seems that he

0:39.2

is trying to do and what that means within a Christian context. And of course, in his kind of role

0:46.6

as this strange fool that is kind of bridging contradictions, let's say, we'll try to look at

0:52.5

that and try to make sense of it a little bit.

This is Jonathan Pajot. Welcome to the symbolic world. And so when the Donda album came out, I have to admit that in listening to it, my first reaction, and I talked about this on the Q&A, was that the

1:29.4

album is all over the place, that it somehow is very disparate in terms of sound, it seems very

1:36.1

uneven, even in terms of production, and it seems to be scattered all around. And this, of course,

1:43.1

is compounded by some of the actions

1:45.1

that he's been taking.

1:46.2

You know, this thing of collaborating with someone

1:48.8

like Marilyn Manson, who is one of the most anti-Christian characters

1:52.7

in music, let's say, and people like the baby

1:55.8

that has been very controversial recently
