Summary

Commusings is our Sunday morning newsletter where we take a moment to think deeply on the topics of spirituality, philosophy, and culture. This special Mother's Day Commusings is written and read by Schuyler Grant as an ode to her mother that is equal parts heartwarming reflection on motherlove and a deep wrestling with the tangled emotions becoming and being a mother. As she says, "And thus began the beginning of all the good things and the end of all the good things." To sign up for our weekly Commusings newsletter, visit onecommune.com. Welcome to the Commian podcast. This is Jeff Krasno. Okay, so today's episode is a reading from my

doting and long-suffering partner, Skyler, from her essay titled The Blessing and the Curse.

She is referring to motherhood, of course, and this is a topic

0:24.1

that she is well qualified to address. I dutifully delivered three X chromosomes, and she's done

0:57.3

who walk the razor's edge of both baking and earning the bread, nursing both child and parent.

1:05.1

I envision Skyler somewhat ridiculously as Durga, the Hindu goddess with a dozen arms, bearing not the weapons

of ancient India, but the tools of modernity, battered iPhone, corporate prospectus, digital

1:26.6

Mothers manage not just to tame chaos, but conducted into symphonies.

1:32.3

So without further delay, here's my beloved Skyler, reading her Mother's Day musing titled

1:38.0

The Blessing and the Curse, a mother's ode to her mother in five parts.

Part one.

2:02.1

Bittersweet fruit.

2:04.6

I didn't lust after motherhood,

2:07.5

except for a brief interlude in my early teens

2:09.9

when I desperately wanted an itty-bitty helpless baby

2:13.1

that loved only me.

2:15.6

Oh, evolutionary biology, you crafty old bastard. My mother, Anne, or Annie,
