Summary

In this spooky Halloween episode, we consider the politics of horror by looking at the ultimate slasher film, John Carpenter's classic HALLOWEEN (1978). We discuss the way that the horror genre has traditionally served as an outlet for society's fears and traumas, and how this suburban horror story in particular articulated a certain post-'60s, pre-Reagan reactionary current in America. Don't worry, we like this movie, we promise we won't ruin it for you. PLUS: eve-of-the-election punditry and childhood Halloween memories.

Luke Savage. Hey, everyone.

0:19.4

We're recording this a day before Halloween.

0:21.4

It will hopefully be posted on Halloween or before Halloween.

0:24.9

Maybe you'll hear a little bit about it after.

0:26.8

But there's a real monster this Halloween season and he's in the White House.

0:32.5

Yeah, so we do have a very topical film, maybe topical to the point of fault.

0:37.3

I don't know, for this

0:38.3

week's episode. But before we talk about that, I mean, we are recording this episode a few

0:43.1

days before the U.S. presidential election. So, I mean, some rank punditry is probably called

0:49.8

for. I got my election map worked out, and I think every state is going blue from east to west,

0:57.7

sea to shining sea. It's just going to be a big blue wave. And I'm hoping this prediction will go

1:03.2

viral. I think we can make it happen. Well, you joke, but I have seen a couple versions of that

1:09.1

from who's the guy that actually owned us all

1:11.3

really hard last time. Is it Bill Mitchell? Guys like that. I don't, I haven't seen Bill Mitchell

1:17.1

recently, but guys like that, the sort of like, I don't know, mega sort of alt media types,

1:22.9

like doing these maps that are just completely improbable where like Trump flips New York

1:27.3

red or something

1:28.2

like that. But then similarly you have, you know, they're like, you know, once you uncuck the polls,

1:32.6

like this is what you get or whatever. And then, you know, similarly, the, I think the Krasenstein's

1:38.2

themselves are banned from Twitter, but you know, their spiritual equivalence. I've seen versions of it

1:43.1

where, yeah, it's like the projection you just gave, but unironically.
