This is a topic that sadly has been one of concern for the last 30 years.

It's of concern because ADHD continues to be a diagnosis that remains controversial and one that continues to have

significant impact for children both diagnosed and undiagnosed within the school system and in their lives in general.

The ADHD designation is one that is made typically by clinicians but is a diagnosis that can also be made

by school evaluation teams.

Unfortunately, when the law was passed in 1975, ADHD was not specifically identified as one of the disability

categories and the combination of there being controversy and dispute in the society at large as to the legitimacy of ADHD as a diagnosis

and there being no specific reference to ADHD within the special education law led many schools to

take the position that ADHD was not a covered disorder.
