Summary

This week (while experimenting with a Sunday release), Kate takes on a type of influencer/coach she hasn’t specifically discussed yet; wellness influencers that make a living teaching people how to manifest their dream life (by way of having allegedly manifested theirs). This is a confusing conversation; Kate both wholeheartedly believes in impossible things happening that she can’t comprehend due to her own [manifest] density in understanding the vastness of the universe, yet also feels griped by influencers who exploit this concept’s supernatural classification to overpromise and overcharge for things they can’t deliver. From her confusing thoughts toward spirituality and new age wellness, to discussing the law of attraction and The Secret, to the alarming materialism of modern social media manifesters, to the mental health implications of the logic that “thoughts = reality,” to the troubling ways issues like fertility are targeted, to some reflections from Kate in wondering if she's manifested her career.... this topic is layered, to say the least. Enjoy!

And so it is.

Hi, everybody. Welcome back to the Be There in Five Podcast on Kate Kennedy, your host.

0:14.0

Today we're going to talk about what I think is a really fascinating sector of the Internet.

0:20.0

In the fascinating sector of the kind of self-help guru, kind of self-improvement type influencer,

0:29.8

but more so than the Rachel Hollises of the world that pander toward growth hacking and growing

0:35.6

your business and almost like the more boss-babe angle. I want to talk about people who are influential

0:44.4

in the space of or sell a commodified form of essentially what is the law of attraction,

0:51.9

of people who like coach and teach others about how to manifest the life they desire.

0:57.3

And specifically not the people who do this in a well-intentioned way, because I am not saying

1:03.0

that the law of attraction isn't valid. I think there's a lot of validity to steering where you

1:07.8

stare and we'll get into my windy, confusing spiritual commentary later. Rather, people who

1:14.3

exploit this sort of unknowable abstract concept in favor of their personal profit and use their

1:22.1

own personal anecdote as a means to project onto the population that if it works for me, it can work

1:26.8

for you too. In a way that can be dangerous or detrimental to a person that's in a vulnerable

1:31.1

position. And that's typically who they're praying on, right? But the weirdness for me comes in

1:35.4

where like, I'm not an expert on this. Like, I'm not a power manifestor. I'm not like a high

1:41.9

priestess or like, I don't know. I'm just interested in this and I don't know how to talk about it.

1:47.0

And I feel incredibly dense. Like I'm speaking out of turn, kind of criticizing something that I

1:52.3

maybe don't understand in full. But then part of this that's important to me too is like,

1:57.7

well, your average passer by your average audience member that's absorbing this kind of content

2:02.0

consistently. Like, my opinion is valid too. And like, what I glean from it. What I glean from it

2:07.2

is a confusing combination of like delusion privilege, hope and inspiration. And I don't know how

2:13.4

to reconcile those things. And you know, I call this manifest density not because I hope people
