grew up in Lexington, Kentucky in a horse farm country.

Went to the University of Kentucky and then got myself out west as soon as I could.

But you were doing a little geology work in Kentucky?

Well, I got my undergrad degree there, and so I certainly did my fair share of exploring

the geology of Kentucky and rock climbing and caving and all my outdoor outdoor adventures but most my research has been in the

western United States are actually an a fair amount over in Asia.

How did you develop an interest in geology?

As a kid just driving around in Kentucky, I was fascinated with like the road cuts on the

highways which in Kentucky they build the four-lane highways by just blasting

through one hill and dumping it into the next valley.

And so as you drive along, there are these walls of rock that are continually changing.

And I was fascinated with why is this one different from the next one?

And occasionally those cliffs expose interesting things and fossils.

And I, you know, from a very young age, it's all I wanted to be was a geologist and study the earth and the rocks and how they got

to be how they are. What was the next move? You went to Asia next or you went to the West Coast?

I went to Idaho for a while actually and I got a master's degree there and

worked in the Rocky Mountains and then fell in love with teaching when I was a teaching assistant and then went on to Oregon State

University because they offered me an opportunity to do research in the Himalayan mountains
