Summary

“The simple fact is that the LFB did know. They knew, and lives could and should have been saved”. This week the inquiry heard new evidence about the management of the LFB and how it trained its staff ahead of the Grenfell Tower fire. A lawyer representing a group of the bereaved, survivors and residents said his clients did not want heroes in the LFB, “but well trained professionals working to a well-structured plan”. The LFB’s former deputy commissioner revealed the government failed to act when the LFB asked it to warn councils about the risks of cladding in 2009, more than seven years before the Grenfell Tower fire. And the brigade’s former head of development and training answered questions about what lessons the LFB had learned from previous fires.

Hello and welcome to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry podcast with me, Kate Lamble.

This week, the inquiry started hearing evidence about a brand new topic,

0:13.1

examining the management of the London Fire Brigade

0:15.1

and how it prepared its staff ahead of the Grenfell Tower fire.

0:19.2

The inquiry has already heard from 82 firefighters who attended the incident on the 14th of June 2017.

0:25.8

The podcast covered that evidence in episodes 21 to 67.

And during that time, we learnt that as well as London Fire Brigade staff queuing to enter the burning building

0:34.9

in an attempt to rescue people, there were problems.

Communication equipment failed, water pumps could only reach the lower floors, and almost

0:42.7

no one present in the early stages was able to recognise the situation in front of them as a

0:47.8

cladding fire. That's what's raised these questions, about just how prepared the LFB should have

0:53.6

been for an incident such

0:54.9

as the fire at Grenfell Tower. During her evidence back in 2018, the then-commissioner of the

1:00.5

London Fire Brigade, Danny Cotton, was clear. The LFB learned from every operation they carry out.

But in the same manner that I wouldn't develop a training package for a space shuttle to land on the

1:11.6

shard. So I wouldn't expect us to be developing training or response to something that simply

1:16.8

shouldn't happen. Whether Grenfell really was as unpredictable for the LFB as a space shuttle landing

1:22.6

on the shard is essentially what this section of evidence is examining. And this week, we learnt the government failed to act

1:29.5

when the LFB asked them to send out a warning about the risks of cladding

1:32.9

more than seven years before the fire.

And IT problems meant the London Fire Brigade didn't roll out training,
