Did our Lord Jesus Christ descend into hell?

What does that mean?

Well, in the Apostles' Creed, we say that Christ ascended into hell.

And that means that he went down and he declared his victory

over sin, death, and the devil, but also that he ransom the Old Testament faithful.

I'm talking about Abraham, Sarah, David, all the people who died in faith before Christ because heaven had not yet been open.

The price for salvation had not been paid in the cross.

So Christ went down and he ransomed, he redeemed those people and brought them to heaven.

And so today we're going to look at some of the Bible verses

that talk about this mystery of Christ

descent into hell, as we call the harrowing of hell.

And there's a lot of them.

There's about eight of them, and you can see them all

in the notes below.

Today we're just going to look at a few of them so we'll begin first with a

passage from St. Paul.

In Ephesians 4-9, our Lord Jesus Christ descended into hell after he offered his life in the cross.

And Paul says, quote, now that he ascended,

what is it, but because he also descended first

into the lower parts of the earth, end quote. Paul mentions the lower parts of the earth, end quote.
