0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I am one of your three hosts for today on the |
0:08.1 | Lin. It is July 26th, 2022 and we are here back again for another monthly episode in our wonderful series featuring the John |
0:21.7 | Larson. Today the topic of our discussion is Church versus the Gospel, the infamous Pullman talk and joining us as always for these series are the John |
0:34.4 | Larson from Mormon Expression podcast. Hey John Larson. Hello. Thanks for joining us brother. It is my pleasure to be here. And of course we have the |
0:44.9 | Cara Burrell or nuance. Joining us from studio. Yeah location. Yeah, here I am from my own home studio. How do I look guys? Epic. Thanks. Great to have you guys. Yeah, so it's been about a month since we did and what I think was a really epic important episode on on the toxicity of the great salt lake. I want to talk about that a bit. But before I do John, I'm going to let you lead. |
1:14.7 | The intro announcements or commentary. Sure, if you remember, I pledge that I would address issues that come up or or things that people say there's a couple that I want to address. The first one is I've received a couple of messages and people posted on the board saying something to the |
1:30.8 | effect of I'm really worried about John Larson and that he might blow a gasket and people legitimately concerned for my health as I ran in rage on the inner webs. A couple of things I'd like to say when I do these podcasts, I do not suppress my emotions at all, which is. |
1:49.2 | It took me a lot of practice because I grew up as a white male in the United States. So I was trained from a little early age to suppress my emotions. So you're getting the raw of what I'm feeling, which is why sometimes my language is a little course or whatnot, but I don't spend time doing this outside of this as a matter of fact, sometimes in the pre show. |
2:10.2 | So John or carousel, did you see this thing that happened or did you hear this and the answer usually is no, I haven't heard about any of it. I tend not to stay plugged in the church and these things for my own mental health and well being. |
2:24.2 | When I'm not doing this, I spend my time outside, I listen to the birds, I watch the trees, I watch the sunset, I look at the stars, we live in a beautiful place and a beautiful planet and there's a lot better things to do than this. So I would say for everybody who's going through the process of process, taking the church either you're still in it or you're partly in it or your families in it or or whatnot. |
2:53.2 | It's important to get outside. It's important to do something else and and to work maintain your mental health, but thank you for those who are concerned and that's one of the reasons that I left Mormon expression in the first place and I meter very carefully how much I engage this world because it's important to take care of our hearts. |
3:13.2 | So you're saying we shouldn't worry about you because you practice self care. I tried to. Yeah, you titrate your Mormon engagement. Is that what you're saying? Yes, yes, that's a good way to put it. All right. |
3:26.2 | Cara, how about you? Are you titrating your Mormon engagement? Yeah, I think I also echo what John just said, come run the hidden powertrails of the forest, come taste the sun, sweet bears of the earth, can roll in all the riches around you and never once wonder what they're worth. So just when you're really stressed out about Mormon stuff, think of Pocahontas lyrics, go outside and you'll be fine. That's what I also practice. It all comes back to Disney. |
3:51.2 | It all comes back to whatever Cara can reference for the millennial audience. |
3:57.2 | All right, yeah, you guys grew up watching Disney movies didn't shit the millennials. Yeah, but my second thing. Thank you. My second thing, people have asked me, you know, we talked about the lake last time and climate crisis and that sort of thing. |
4:11.2 | And so people asked me in different forms, what can I do? First of all, I'm not necessarily an expert on climate change or what or what not. And I, you know, some people have asked me about how I decided to move. |
4:28.2 | First of all, that process took me five or six years of very careful thought and planning, careful consideration, all that stuff. So it wasn't anything I entered into lightly. And I would say if you're, if you choose to become a climate refugee, I wouldn't count myself as a climate refugee. |
4:46.2 | But if you choose to become one, be very cautious and be very careful. Don't make that decision in haste. Think about, you know, where you and your family want to be taken a consideration, all the factors. I have a list of a whole bunch of factors I used if anybody really wants it. |
5:03.2 | They can send me an email at john at johnlarson.org or send them to Mormon stories. And I'll be happy to forward that along. |
5:10.2 | John, I didn't tell you this, but I had someone email me and say john larcens episode inspired us to sell our house and we're moving to Michigan and we're going to homestead on the frontier in Michigan. That's a true story. I'm not making that up. |
5:24.2 | Well, send him my way. We'll talk. You know, I have a, I, we have three acres out here that we're involved in all sort of that kind of stuff. |
5:34.2 | The, the next thing about what you can do. Actually, the front line of climate change, there's, there's trying to get the big organizations and the big who's it and what's it not to change. |
