This case was hard to navigate due to conflicting accounts and opinions of the people who knew the shooter.

The media didn't do a great job of fact-checking, especially the accounts from fellow

students, which were sometimes embellished. The shooter's facts also morphed with each of our

parole hearings. If you're listening to Episode 16, Brenda Spencer, on December 12, 1954, 19-year-old Dorothy Nadine Hobell married 25-year-old

Wallace Edward Spencer. Dorothy received a bachelor's degree in business, with additional

coursework in accounting from Woodbury College in Los Angeles, California. She worked out of a home office, which was unique for that time.

Their first child, Scott Matthew, was born in 1956.

Their daughter, Teresa Lynn, was born in 1958,

and their third child, Brenda Ann Spencer, was born on April 3, 1962.

Dorothy and Wallace had dramatically divergent personalities. Wally was a shy man a few words. Dut was outgoing and spent most of her free time

hauling their children to extracurricular activities. Not surprising, when people are so dissimilar, it's hard to make a marriage work. Add

infidelity to the mix, and the result was a contentious divorce. Wallace stepped out on their

marriage and was seeing other women. He wanted to move into a bachelor pad for a year, and then

move back in with that later. He, in fact,

had already rented the apartment. When Dorothy found out, she filed for divorce in 1971.
