We have as human beings and really as evolved creatures, a built-in tendency to obsess

over that which can be done better.

So almost every ancestor that any of us have had did not have enough food.

And that meant that preserving calories that had already been found was as useful as

So there is this kind of obsession with figuring out where we are being inefficient and fixing

It's a very good instinct, but it runs amok.

And so what we have is a world in which various things have combined.

We have an economic system.

We have technology, we have a division of labor in which people can be very specialized

on tiny little fractions of a computer program or a mechanism.

And it has resulted in a runaway process in which we do solve problems left and right.

But what we don't do is recognize that each of those solutions carries a danger of unintended

consequences.
