Summary

Scientists are reporting that there is now more carbon dioxide in the air than ever before, and with OPEC recently agreeing to accelerate oil production following pressure from the Biden administration to stabilize global markets, what gives? And with cracks showing in the EU as energy prices start to bite, is there a way through this crisis that keeps us on track with the goals of the Paris Agreement?

Our guest this week has her own solution. We speak to Tzeporah Berman about her journey to form the big and bold Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and what the impact is of the Stockholm 50+ President’s communique calling for a phase out of coal, oil and gas.

And stick around ‘til the end for some amazing feel good music this week - ‘No Te Rindas’ by Charmant Mushaga!

And my name is Paul Tapuardiconson. This week we talk about the recent announcement

0:21.3

from OPEC to increase output, the fact that it has an effective prices and what that means

0:25.5

for the end of the fossil fuel era. We speak to Zappora Berman, the director of the

0:29.4

fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty, and we have music from Sharman Rashaghan. Thanks

for being.

So, there is a lot to go through this week as ever, very fascinating piece of news that

0:50.2

came out this week, which is the after months of pressure on OPEC from the Biden administration

0:55.5

and others. There was an announcement in ReAD that production of oil would be increased

1:01.3

by 650,000 barrels a day. Now, you would imagine that that level of increase would lead to

1:07.4

an effect on the market, but interestingly, after that big announcement that Saudi Arabia

1:11.9

and Allied producers would start plumping more quickly, the price of oil actually went

1:16.3

up to $120 a barrel on Monday. There's lots of reasons for this, not least, that a proportion

1:22.2

of the additional capacity was already placed into the market. So, as a result, it had

1:26.7

less of an impact. However, what it demonstrates is that the globe now has a really limited

1:33.4

suite of options available to try to bring the price of oil down. We're pretty much pumping

1:39.2

at capacity. We can't just say, let's just turn the taps on and pump more. If we're going

1:43.8

to deal with the cost of living crisis, if we're going to get on top of the terrible

1:47.8

way in which energy costs are actually creating hardship for people around the world, the only

1:53.2

way to do that is with a more rapid shift to renewable energy because these prices of

1:57.3

fossil fuels have spiraled out of control. This should be a real wake-up call. OPEC and

2:02.7

Saudi Arabia come forward and try to reduce the price and they can't do it. Therefore,
