Hello, I'm Chris Thomas. I'm here in the Mormon Stories Studio for a special

interview with Sandra Tanner. I want to thank my friend Dr. John Dillon for

making these lovely facilities available for this unique conversation. As you

know, Sandra Tanner has perhaps been interviewed more than anyone in the broad

field of Mormondom and John Dillon has spent more time interviewing Sandra than

any living human being that I know. So much of her story and that of her

husband Gerald has been documented in various places and soon will be in the

release soon to be release biography of their lives written by the very capable

scholar Dr. Ronald Huggins. But today we're going to do a deep dive into one

particular subject that has been touched upon here and there but has never

received the attention that in my estimation it is due. We want a chronicle

Sandra's and Gerald's journey with the Book of Mormon which is a fascinating

sojourn from believing LDS members to believing Christians who continued to

hold the Book of Mormon as scripture to believing Christians who began to

doubt the book's scriptural status to that of critic of the book and then

their many resulting publications documenting what for them were

problematic areas. The story is a complex one which needs a layered and nuanced

recounting. For the sake of full disclosure I have known Sandra since about

2014 since which time we have become close friends speaking mainly at long

distance but some occasional dinners when I would pass through Salt Lake City.
