Summary

This week’s podcast is with theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli. Carlo works mainly in the field of quantum gravity and is a founder of loop quantum gravity theory. Carlo’s books ‘Seven Brief Lessons on Physics’, ‘Reality Is Not What It Seems’, and ‘The Order of Time’ are international bestsellers which have been translated into 43 languages. His new book, “There are Places in the World Where Rules are Less Important than Kindness” is published next month and features his reflections on everything, from Newton’s alchemy to Einstein’s mistakes, to the consciousness of an octopus, hallucinogens and the meaning of atheism. In this podcast we discuss the history of science and religion, how our knowledge of quantum theory and mechanics can effect our sense of morality and reality and we explore the nature of consciousness from Carlo’s perspective of theoretical physicist. Hello, I'm Russell Brand. I'm really keen to give you this bit of my podcast from Luminary

0:05.6

under the skin for nothing. This is a bit from the chat with Carlo Revelli. Carlo Revelli is a

0:10.5

world renowned quantum theorist or is a physics theorist, specialist in quantum theory, came up with

0:17.2

the quantum gravity loop. Now in this bit of the conversation from my podcast, which is only on

0:22.0

Luminary, you get a 15 minute sample here to see if you like it. Imagine I'm a drug dealer and I'm

0:26.7

just giving you a little bit of free drugs in the hope that you will develop a chronic dependency

0:32.2

on that. It's very cynical really. Now this is like a call it a free buy, a free treat. Like when

0:36.3

you're in the supermarket and they've got one of those little see-through bowls with a bit of a

0:40.4

fudge brown in it. Have you had that happen? This is that. So in this bit of the conversation, what

0:45.9

were you talking about Django? The bit where you talk about reality and morality and morality.

0:52.5

Yeah. Wow. Where are you saying, are you believing, are we believing our reality into being

0:58.6

and how does it affect our morality? That's a great question. Listen to that.

1:04.6

Are we believing our reality into being? Because he said that at the most basic level, there is no

1:10.4

static reality. So this is under the skin from Luminary. It's not just under the skin floating

1:15.9

around untethered. It's very much on the platform of under the skin of Luminary. I'm looking at you,

1:20.9

Jen. You don't look well. Really? Yeah, you look a bit pale. You're feeling all right in this

1:26.4

moment. Is it the thumb? Yeah. Oh, whatcha wanna do? Keep going. Keep going.

1:35.6

Poor Jen. Carlo Revelli is a physical, no, he's not a physical theorist. He's a theoretical

1:41.5

physicist who has made significant contributions to the physics of space and time. He directs the

1:46.2

quantum gravity research group of the center of the physique, theoretic. Oh, no, no,

1:50.3

for a minute. Oh my god. Imagine that was your job.

1:55.6

Center, the physique, the Greek in my say France. Carlo's book, Seven Brief Lessons on Physics,
