Nurse Ethel Lote was just 18 years old when she was thrown into the war effort, caring for troops returning from Dunkirk.

0:46.0 | Because I was there right from the beginning of the war at the Burntwood Military Hospital |
0:52.0 | where we had the first convoy back to this country after the Dunkirk Fiasco. |
1:00.0 | And because I'd say that if there was a war, I would join the Civil Nursing Reserve, |
1:09.0 | which meant I would have to go to a military hospital. |
1:12.0 | And the nearest hospital to where I lived was Burntwood Hospital. |
1:19.0 | The military hospital was built in the grounds of St Matthew's psychiatric hospital |
1:25.0 | and built especially for the war and just finished in time. |
1:30.0 | Over a year when we knew there would probably be a war, I joined the St John Ambulance Brigade |
1:38.0 | and became qualified in all the different things, you know, first aid home nursing. |
1:43.0 | And then I was then a VAD which was a nurse, not fully trained. |
