Summary

In this episode, we discuss why timing matters in dog training and why you cannot escape it, how it’s really about processing time, reaction time does have a biological basis, so just like we do with dogs, make sure you are addressing your biological needs first, what we can do to reduce processing time, how to simplify decisions, creating predictability in the training session to make good timing easier, and using video to practice your timing without screwing up your dog any more than necessary.

you know, if you hand me your dog who moves very differently, looks very different than the dog

0:04.7

that I was just training, it takes me a second to adjust my timing so that I'm landing my clicks

0:09.9

with the dog's behavior the way that I want to. And the more dogs that I practice with,

the faster that calibration happens. So there is actually a skill there of being able to move

0:19.5

from behavior to behavior, of being able to move from dog to dog and carry that timing with you. I think there's kind of a little bit of being able to move from behavior to behavior, of being able to move from

0:21.3

dog to dog and carry that timing with you. I think there's kind of a little bit of a meta skill.

1:11.4

the only time that it's actually quiet enough in this house to record a podcast these days.

1:16.8

But speaking of time, that's what we're talking about this week. We are talking about timing

1:20.6

and how to do it better in terms of training, of course. So I'll share my thoughts on timing,

1:27.3

but first, I need to send a
