In June, Clay Jenkinson was invited to give an endowed lecture on the humanities at the Library Company of Philadelphia, America's first successful lending library and oldest cultural institution. It was founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin. We discuss that lecture and Alexander von Humboldt, as well as the amazing artifacts Clay saw while in Philadelphia.

It's just you and me Clay and it was great fun. You reported in about a recent trip to Philadelphia

Now we're recording this in the middle of June and that's a you went at the beginning of June

I think right? Yeah, so this was June 9th or 10th, I think and and so about the time in 1804

That Alexander von Humboldt the Great Prussian polymath and explorer visited Thomas Jefferson in Washington DC

But he began that North American side trip in Philadelphia and got to see the library company of Philadelphia

and got to go to the American Philosophical Society and the University of Pennsylvania

We don't know whether he saw the orary, but we all agreed probably

He did and so that was my journey to give an endowed lecture

Which was on Humboldt in Jefferson, but the lecture which I'm quite pleased with and they seem to enjoy

Was the least of it the most of it was the cultural tour that I was

Was gifted by these extraordinary friends and and leaders of the library company Philadelphia the American

Philosophical society and the Academy of Natural Sciences not to mention the University of Pennsylvania
