Often when we talk about our founding, we say that racism is the original

sense slavery is the original sense and that is often taken to mean the

things white people did to black people. The things white people did to Native

American people is the original sense. Therefore, the implication is that

therefore white Americans are the original sinners and they must atone for

what their people did. And I said, no, that's not it. The original sense is that

we are a nation that was founded on the idea that we were all created equal with

these unalienable rights and then we enslaved people. And so race was of course

central to who was a slave and who wasn't. But the idea that a nation founded

on such an idea, what enslaved people was the actual problem with the

founding at the founding of our country.
