Summary

Jen is joined by Amb. Dennis Ross to explore the recent developments shaking up middle eastern politics.  They cover the cross demographic and widespread protests in Israel against attempts by hard liners to take control of the judiciary and what it means for the country’s future.  Then, they dive into Netanyahu’s efforts to create a breakthrough deal to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia, even though it might mean concessions to Palestine.  If successful, it has the potential to solidify peace with the Sunni countries.  Will it finally bring about a lasting transformation in the region?

Hello, this is Jen Rubin, and this is Jen Rubin's green room. Today we have a guest who's

0:17.9

unravel a lot of confusing information we're getting about the state of Israel.

0:23.6

There is always controversy involving Israel, whether it's involving Iran, whether it's involving the Palestinians,

0:30.1

whether it's involving the religious community in Israel.

0:34.0

But it seems of late that things have gotten even more complex and confusing.

0:39.3

There is a constitutional crisis ongoing there that in some respects bears resemblance to the right-wing movements we have seen in the United States.

0:49.3

They're heavily influenced by the religious right.

0:52.2

But in other respects, it's uniquely Israeli. And of late,

0:56.7

there have been enormous demonstrations, unlike anything that Israel has seen in its recent past.

1:03.8

And those demonstrations have been directed towards the Netunahu government, which has pushed

1:10.0

through at least one so-called judicial reform.

1:14.5

And we'll talk about whether that's really a reform or not.

1:17.9

And the country has exploded, quite frankly.

1:21.2

There's been a broad coalition of groups, business, secular Jews, religious Jews,

1:27.2

who have come together week after week for

1:30.6

over 30 weeks now in protest of this effort to what the government says would be

1:37.7

increasing democracy, but which they quite, I think, correctly feel would be a effort to

1:43.8

subdue the judiciary and make them

1:46.9

subservient to this right-wing government. So to explain all of that and more is someone who has

1:54.7

had decades of experience in Israel and the Middle East, Dennis Ross. Dennis was a special envoy to the Middle East.

2:01.9

He has served in Republican administrations and Democratic administrations.

2:07.5

So, Dennis, welcome to the show.
