I'm Erin Scala and here's our show today. Oh, If you're into philosophy, you'll be happy to know that wine fueled the

writings and debates of some of our earliest and most respected philosophers.

In ancient Greece, specifically the Hellenic period,

14 to 30 men would gather in a room with several couches

and drink watered down wine from vessels known as craters.

First, they'd pour a few drops out for their gods and ancestors.

Then they would discuss and debate a topic or two.

The night usually ended in reverie after multiple creators of wine

had been drunk. The idea was to come together for wine and goodwill, but also to

explore specific topics. In part, these symposiums of ancient Greece are the wellspring of the basic concepts of modern philosophy.

Now things could get crazy towards the end. A common drinking game to play was Kotibos. This is a game that we really need to bring back.

In Kotibos you swirl your drags in the bottom of your drinking bowl and then fling them from the bowl at a target.

It's kind of like playing darts with leaves. ball and then fling them from the bowl at a target.

Your goal is to knock the top disk off its stand with your sediment

and then have the disk fall onto the lower disc

and make a ringing sound.
