Today the topic I'm going to consider is self-seeking. And we live in such an age of self-love, self-worship

that we just need to be where. Yet it's really always been this way since the fall.

Our self can get in the way and lead us astray. And we're told, we're told all the time,

just do what your emotions are telling you to do. It's like what a horrendous idea that is.

Do what you feel. No, no, no, 100 times. No. Feelings are never a reliable guide.

They're subject to change in a flash. And that whole idea of follow your heart is ridiculous

because it will lead you to the wrong place. Don't go on a self-guided spiritual journey

because you'll find nothing but a dead end. And this self-seeking is as old as a garden of Eden.

Didn't Eve give way to a desire for self-promotion? And then Adam followed her.

Thomas Brooks, preacher in the 1600s, says this, quote,

Self-seekers are self-losers and self-destroyers. And then he gives us a few examples

from the Bible of self-seekers who were self-destroyers. Listen to this.

Absolence and Judas seek themselves and hang themselves.

Saul seeks himself and kills himself.

Heyman sought himself and lost himself. That which self-seekers think should be a staff to support them

becomes by the hand of justice and iron rod to break them.

That which they would have as springs to refresh them becomes a gulf utterly to destroy them.

Epsilon got his hair tangled in a tree while seeking to exalt himself above his father to be the king.

Judas was promoting himself hoping to gain something by betraying Christ and he hung himself.

Saul put himself above the Lord and fell in his own sword and battle.

And Heyman so full of himself. And yet the Lord brought him down in a great judgment.
