It was a surprise to me when I first started gardening that not all of my crops handle the hot summer well.

How do you make the most of your summer gardening in the highest heat? Nicole Burke of Gardenary joins me today on the Beginner’s Garden Podcast to discuss how to best handle our gardens in the heat. Click below to listen or continue reading.

I thought July would be the perfect time to talk about gardening in the heat.

0:15.0

That was something that really caught me by surprise when I first started.

As you know, I garden in Arkansas

0:20.9

and we have very hot and humid summers.

0:24.8

But I never thought that that could be a bad thing

0:28.0

and that certain plants don't actually love

0:30.7

how hot we get in the summer.

0:32.9

But as I learned through a cross country trip a few years ago,

0:36.6

I realized that we in the South don't have a corner

0:39.5

on heat in the middle of the summer.

0:41.7

One year I went up to South Dakota

0:43.5

and it actually happened to be hotter there

0:45.8

than it was when I left Arkansas.

0:50.6

you probably have to deal with some of these things.

0:53.7

Some of us have just a longer hot

0:56.0

season than others. But we still have to answer the question. How do we garden in the heat?

1:02.8

And I'm not talking about physically. I mean, obviously I try to do my garden work in the morning

1:07.8

and in the evening when the heat isn't so bad. Instead I'm

1:11.4

talking about the plants. How do we deal with plants that don't love the heat? How do
