Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I'm your host John DeLin. It is March 19th,

0:05.7

2021 and we are in the middle of kind of a little bit of a Mark Hoffman week or two.

0:11.1

We have been wanting to explore a bit. The story of Mark Hoffman

0:16.4

primarily in

0:18.1

Celebration of or on the tales of the amazing Netflix documentary murder among the Mormons by Mormons Jared Hess and Tyler Miesum

0:26.4

and we've had Sandra Tanner on to talk extensively about her experiences knowing Mark Hoffman,

0:32.4

her and her husband Gerald and all of their experiences. It was one of my favorite episodes of all time on Mormon Stories podcast.

0:38.8

In a couple days, we're going to be having Jared and Tyler on

0:42.4

Jared Hess and Tyler Miesum, the filmmakers to talk about the film itself.

0:46.0

But I could think of no one better or few people as good as the

0:50.9

John Hamer to bring him back on to Mormon Stories and to kind of do an analysis and the analysis that John and I thought would be really interesting to do would be to focus on

1:01.5

kind of two things in the Mark Hoffman story. Basically number one, the documents, the key

1:07.5

forgeries that he made to talk about the background, maybe why they're interesting and kind of a little bit about their stories in their background.

1:14.3

And then also to kind of focus on the question of whether or not the LDS Church, the Mormon Church leaders,

1:20.7

were involved in any attempts that cover up or deception or shenanigans because one of the things that came out of the Hoffman documentary or one of the big questions that comes out of it was

1:32.0

was their intentional deception or an intentional effort on the part of Mormon Church leaders to

1:38.7

purchase documents to hide documents to keep troubling information from the membership.

1:43.6

And I don't think the documentary kind of left us with the clear sense of whether that happened or not.

1:48.5

And so John Hamer is definitely one of our favorite if not our most favorite guests to have on Mormon Stories.

1:55.2

So John Hamer, we're so glad to have you back. Thanks for joining us.

1:58.2

Thank you so much for having me. Yeah, it was a really riveting documentary and it really brought back, I don't know, that whole story which

2:06.9

you know was so so impacted everybody in the the Mormon historians community.
