| 0:00.0 | Hey everyone, welcome to Pink Shade with Erin Martin. I am so lucky. I'm the luckiest girl in the world because I get to talk to Alex Winston today. |
| 0:24.0 | Now maybe you don't know this name off the top of your head, but you are going to know who I'm talking about as soon as I describe what you have probably viewed in the past month, which is her video, Visu a million. |
| 0:36.0 | And it's with Coltie and Debbie. She is an indie songstress. She's been putting out music for a long, long time. She's a fabulous singer. |
| 0:44.0 | She's a fun girl because she loves 90 day fiancee just as much as we do. And she did a hilarious video spoof on the Larissa Coltie story. And so Alex is here today to talk to us about her career and also like how this video came to be and how it was filming with Coltie Debbie and the cats. Welcome Alex. |
| 1:03.0 | Hi, thank you so much for having me. Hi, light of my week. I'm so excited to talk to you. So I put out on my I have a private Patreon group called Hey, Bunky, which is fashioned after what the Bunky's called each other and love after lockup a show that I'm telling you you got to start watching if you love 90 day. You will absolutely love it. |
| 1:22.0 | I'm so I'm currently wearing a pastel, essentially a prison jumpsuit right now. So I'm already ready to go. It's just perfect. But your next spoof video will be based on love after lockup. I'm predicting that right now. |
| 1:37.0 | I don't doubt it or I'm just going to get like a lifelong pen tail. Exactly. A prison pen. How you go to meet an inmate.com. That's how they all meet. We never knew this is a website. We needed it in our lives, but it is here. Yeah. |
| 1:50.0 | Yeah. So I know that well, you don't need that. You're in a relationship. It's all good. But just keep it back burner, baby. Back burner. So Alex, first of all, before we get into this amazing video, which I've watched no less than like 12 times because I wanted to write down every single reference to the show. I was like, oh my god, I can't believe they're playing on a slot machine. What is happening before we get into any of that though. Let's just talk about you and who you are. What you've been doing with music, your career. Just catch people up. |
| 2:19.0 | Sure. So yes, I'm Alex and I am a singer, a songwriter. And I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. And I've been making music. I would say like professionally for about 12 years. I started playing in high school and touring and doing all that stuff. And I moved to college. Sorry, I moved to New York when I was 20. |
| 2:46.0 | Oh, wow. And just started, you know, playing out playing live. And that's when I got my first record deal and recorded my first record. And it's kind of been just a nonstop music since then. |
| 2:59.0 | So I read something about you were trained classically as an opera singer. I was. Okay. Yes, I was. Now what does that mean as a child growing up? You took lessons. |
| 3:13.0 | Basically what it means is my mother was sick of me singing around the house every day. I was driving her crazy. And she had a friend who taught opera lessons. And I guess when you are young and developing and your body is changing the. |
| 3:30.0 | I guess the healthiest way to start singing is opera. I guess it is the healthiest for your vocal cords as you're developing. So that's kind of how I got into it. It wasn't like this love of Puccini or anything. I mean, I just knew I loved to sing. |
| 3:49.0 | And that was good for someone that was just developing. So I ended up doing that for 10 years. And I ended up really loving it and appreciating it as I got a little older and and it definitely helped me learn how to keep my voice healthy and and different techniques. I think it's kind of subconsciously influenced the way that I sing now. |
| 4:12.0 | It was it was a great experience learning how to sing opera, but it's like not what I'm listening to every day. But any interest. I mean, when I think classically opera trained, I think that you just can't be anyone and do that though. You have to have strength in your voice. I mean, because you're saying it's good to build your voice, but you have to also have an innate gift. Do you not? Yeah, I was always loud. |
| 4:36.0 | I always had it set of pipes. Okay. Okay. So what would you describe your vibe as now? What musically? Has it changed or have you always been in like this pop vein specifically within that, you know, subset? What are just describe your music for people? |
| 4:54.0 | I think it has changed a lot just because I've been doing this for a long time. You know, if you go to my Spotify page, you'll see my first record from, you know, it's almost like eight years ago now is really different from what I'm doing now. But I think I love writing pop melodies. |
| 5:11.0 | So that never changes. I think the instrumentation and the sonics have changed over the years just from being like inspired by different stuff and learning about new music. But that pop element has always kind of been there. |
| 5:24.0 | Okay. And when you decided on this particular to release this song, well, first let me go back. I have to go. I just one thing popped into my head that I forgot to ask you about. I saw that you released an EP years ago called Sister Wife. |
| 5:38.0 | I did. Yeah. I was dying. I was dying. Alex. Is this from reality TV as well? Is that like a reference to Sister Wives or no? |
| 5:47.0 | It was actually I wrote that song before the show came out. And I was so bum when they didn't use the solid like this is perfect. Oh, my God. |
| 5:57.0 | I think my first record was about a lot of exploring a lot of niche American subcultures and trying to find common ground and commonality and like breaking it down to the core emotions behind a lot of things that maybe we look at is different or peculiar. |
