Summary

Join us for a review of Fiona and Terryl Givens' new book: "All Things New: Rethinking Sin, Salvation, and Everything in Between."

According to Amazon: "In this book, Fiona and Terryl Givens trace the roots of our religious vocabulary, explore how a flawed inheritance compounds the wounds and challenges of a life devoted to discipleship, and suggest ways of reformulating our language in more healthy ways all in the hope that, as B. H. Roberts urged, we may all cooperate in the works of the Spirit to find a truer expression of a gospel restored." Panelists include Jana Spangler, Anthony D. Miller, and Brittney Hartley.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. Today I'm one of four co hosts. I'm John DeLin and it's great to have you. It's February 1st, 2021 and we are super excited to be joined in an illustrious panel to be reviewing a new book that has come out by Fiona and Terrell Gibbons and the book is called All Things New, rethinking sin salvation and

everything in between. For those who don't know who Terrell and Fiona Gibbons are, I had them on Mormon Stories podcast years ago before they came out with a book called The God Who Weeps. Terrell had written a lot of books on Mormon history, Mormon theology, Mormon doctrine. Terrell is a real scholar. Fiona is also a real scholar. They are a power couple now within progressive liberal Mormonism. They both are at BYU. Terrell Gibbons for sure works in some capacity at the

Neal A. Maxwell Institute and Fiona teaches at BYU and probably works also in affiliation with the Neal A. Maxwell Institute. If I had to summarize who Terrell and Fiona Gibbons are, they are sort of the power couple for what I call new Mormon apologetics and that's basically just trying to help people either stay in the Mormon church who have faith crises or who have for whom Orthodox approaches to Mormonism are no longer working. And they're also ministers to Mormon

and faith crisis. And for many, many years they have traveled around the globe, attending these special firesides for Mormons and faith crisis, trying to help stem the tide of Mormons leaving the Mormon church. And I've had them on Mormon Stories podcast twice. I feel like I owe it to you guys to explain why I have not had them on Mormon Stories podcast in many years. I do feel like I need to address this over the past several years. People have said to me, John Mormon Stories podcast.

I've been in the same age I used to have progressive Mormons and liberal Mormons used to have people like Richard Bushman and Terrell and Fiona Gibbons on and you no longer have them. I just want to make clear two things. Number one is I still try on Mormon Stories podcast to have progressive and liberal Mormons on just recently I had an epic series with Jim Bennett. And I've had Carl Youngblood I had Jenna Spangler on like I try really hard to have progressive liberal Mormons on Mormon Stories podcast.

I have heard Bushman and or Terrell and Fiona Gibbons is not with me. The problem is with them just a few years ago after my Exhumianication I invited Terrell and Fiona Gibbons on and I'll quote Fiona Gibbons when she declined Fianna wrote thank you for the kind of a таianamy guests on your show.

I think our primary concern is the possible perhaps probable misperception that we may be setting ourselves up as faith crisis gurus which we most certainly are not.

to request to speak from bishops and state presidents and hope something we have to say might help

someone in the community. And then she goes on to ask us to interview other people. So I just

3:06.9

want to make it clear that I would love to have Terrell and Fiona Givens on Mormon stories

3:10.8

podcast anytime. I've invited them multiple times since my communication. They've declined

3:16.9

every time. And the excuse they've given is that they don't want anyone to perceive them as being

3:22.3

gurus for people in faith crisis. I don't understand that reasoning. I invite any of you who know them

3:29.2

or want to reach out to them to ask them why that's their reasoning for not coming on. And I hope

3:35.2

that they'll change their mind and reconsider and come on Mormon stories podcast. I promise to

3:39.9

treat them with love and kindness and respect. The good news is that if I had to choose between

3:45.9

Terrell and Fiona and this incredible panel, I probably a forced would choose this incredible panel

3:51.9

because I love this panel. None of these people I'm very happy to say our first time guests on

3:58.5

Mormon stories podcast. In fact, we've had all of them on recently on Mormon stories podcast.

4:05.2

But I am delighted to invite all of them back on Mormon stories podcast. And I'm going to begin

4:10.9

today by having each of them introduce themselves to our guests. And I'm going to start this time

4:17.9

with Brittany. Brittany, welcome back. Brittany Hartley, welcome back to Mormon stories podcast.
