So it's easy to blame the media, but I do blame the media.

I think the media produces a lot of conflict that is totally out of touch with the way most

Americans feel.

And the way they vote, for example, that the voting patterns of the last election totally

exploded, a lot of media narratives about what white men are like, what black men and

black women are like, what immigrants are like.

So I was deeply satisfied.

Even though I despised a deplored throne, I was deeply satisfied that his share of the

Latino vote went up, he shared the black vote went up, he shared the immigrant vote went

up just because it was a kind of finger in the eye to the certainties and the model.

For today's show, we brought one of our favorite authors, George Packer of the Atlantic, on

to discuss his new book, Last Best Hope, America in Crisis and Rule.

You guys know this, we are in many ways, a book show, we sell a lot of books, we push

a lot of books and I don't want to understate how important we think George Packer's books

are for understanding an America that's in the middle of a massive political realignment.

Last Best Hope is great, but soccer, I both agree that his earlier books, Our Man, Richard

Holbrooke in the end of the American Century and the unwinding and inner history of the

new America are just the perfect way to understand everything that's going on right now.

Yeah, I mean, I told George this on the podcast, I kind of feel like his career kind of tracks

our own, like he's somebody who wrote about a rack, he wrote about foreign policy, but

then he turned this eye towards the rest of the country saying, wait, what's actually
