Summary

You know what to do. You want it. And somehow… you still end up making the exception.

In this episode, I'm telling you a story from my house (marker + toddlers + the phrase "maybe next time")—and why that moment hit me like a freight train. Because "maybe next time" is cute when you're three… but catastrophic when it becomes your strategy as an adult.

We're talking about the real reason you keep repeating the same patterns: you're trying to change the behavior after the decision—of course you are—
stop binging, eat less processed food, work out more, get up with your alarm, stick to your budget, drink less alcohol…

…but the decision is usually made before any of that, in the seconds where you quietly lay down a perspective that makes drifting feel reasonable.

In this episode, you'll hear:

  • The "maybe next time" moment—and why it explains so much about adult patterns

  • What it means that you're wearing the evidence (physically, emotionally, financially)

  • Why you're focusing on the wrong part of the process (and trying to change the wrong part)

  • The "track" metaphor: how your perspective pre-decides your next move

  • Why awareness isn't enough when the moment hits fast, emotional, and automatic

Hello everybody. Welcome back to the Primal Potential podcast. I am Elizabeth Benton. We are continuing our five

0:08.7

episode series. We've just wrapped up our 10 episode series called The Vault. And in this new five

0:15.8

episode series, we are talking about defense. So many of us live in the operation on offense. We are focused on the

0:23.9

things we want to do and the changes we want to make and this is the plan. And then we don't follow

0:29.4

the plan, at least not consistently. The plan doesn't work the way it could have worked had

0:34.1

we followed it. And then we just jumped to another offensive approach.

0:38.3

It makes sense.

0:39.2

That's the way we've always done it.

0:41.1

That's what's taught.

0:42.0

That's what there's books and podcasts and programs on.

0:44.4

But defense is something altogether different.

0:47.6

Defense is the study of the moments where you give yourself permission to not follow through.

0:57.4

And then it is the strategy around fortifying for those moments. Today I want to focus on, I'm actually going to start with

1:02.8

something that's kind of funny, but also frustrating that happened in my house yesterday.

1:10.2

I've got two three-year-olds, as most of you know, and also a four-year-old.

1:14.0

And as all crazy stories go, they were upstairs playing nicely together.

1:19.4

And it's funny because, side note, I really don't want to be a helicopter mom.

1:23.3

And I think a lot of parents in my generation of parenting overparent their kids and

1:28.6

and just kind of like micromanage every interaction to keep them out of trouble or whatnot.

1:33.1

I don't want to be that mom even though I think my tendency is to be that mom is I don't

1:37.3

want anybody to get hurt.

1:38.2

I don't want anything to get broken.
