Summary

Joining Brian and myself in our virtual studio we are delighted to have Dr Rosanne Jepson, Associate Professor in Internal Medicine here at the RVC. Rosanne has many research and clinical interests, though she has been steering our antimicrobial stewardship in our hospital for many years. It is World Antimicrobial Awareness week 18-24 November. We talk about what we are doing and asking our clients and hopefully give you some ideas on what you can do and how you and your teams can participate in this One Health initiative.  We hope that you enjoy.

So joining Brian and myself today in our virtual studio is Associate Professor Rosanne Jepson,

0:26.9

one of our internal medicine, part of our internal medicine team here at the Royal Vet College.

0:33.4

When I say here, we're probably not actually in the Royal Vet College, but anyway, here at the Royal Vet College. So thank you, Roseanne, for joining us. Hi, Dom. Yes. Thanks very much for the

0:43.1

invitation. And although we could talk about many things, and we did before we started recording

0:48.7

this, what we want to talk about in this podcast is about antimicrobial awareness week.

0:56.7

So, so Brousanne, could I ask, when is antimicrobial awareness week?

1:01.9

Predominantly, when is that week?

1:03.5

And also, what is it about?

1:06.0

So antimicrobial awareness week is something that's been running actually for several years now,

1:12.0

and it's a worldwide initiative organised through the World Health Organisation. This year,

1:19.5

it's running from the 18th to the 24th of November, so a couple of weeks time. And it's an opportunity

1:26.5

for us to really take stock and to just think about

1:31.2

antimicrobial use, try to raise awareness about how we're using antibiotics. And this year,

1:38.9

it's particularly important because they're really focusing on having a one health approach. So whilst perhaps previously there's been a well-recognised focus on the use of antibiotics

1:52.0

and concerns relating to antimicrobial resistance, obviously in humans,

1:58.0

we have to recognise that what we do as veterinary surgeons as well is also very important.

2:02.6

And that includes obviously food animal health, but from our perspective, you know, also the antibiotics and antimicrobial stewardship relating to companion animals.
