Let's just dive right in. Let's start with something hugely important. Let's talk about my

Synology. A lot of people have written in and asked me with regard to my computer woes

and I'm putting woes in himongus air quotes there. Why is it I'm so preoccupied with having

a computer that will be good at running plex when I have a Synology specifically a DS 1813

plus sitting right next to me as we speak that can host plex why am I complaining and moaning

about having a computer to do that. Well the reason is that at least as of six months

or maybe a year ago now when I was running Synology running plex on my Synology what ended

up happening was any time I tried to do a live trans code of just about anything it just

ground to a screeching halt and it couldn't keep up with the trans code. Now it could be

that things have gotten better over time it could be that I didn't have my settings

squared away because to marcos point you know generally speaking plex is pretty maintenance

free but it can get a little fiddly on occasion so it very well could be user error but one

way or another my experience with the 1813 plus running plex is that it just cannot trans

code quick enough and thus I need a full bore computer to do it now there are other Synology

models that absolutely can trans code really well on the fly the one that I have in my experience

anyway was not it. Now the other question is okay well why why do you have to trans code

in the first place why don't you just you know have what mp4 video whatever it is all over

the place well let's just say that not all of my media is consistent and I'll leave it

at that I could take down melt and scripts and trans code everything but that takes a long

time because I don't have a trash can mac pro and I'm too darn lazy so that is why I'm not

using plex on my Synology. I have the same Synology and it's not I mean it's it's a fairly

wimp bcpu in there it's not great at transcoding but I haven't really run plex on it I use Synology's
