Thankfully, slavery in the United States by the time the Civil War inevitably happened.

Slavery had been contained within the 15 states that made up the Confederacy in the southeast region of the United States.

Sure, we now know that at one time slavery was happening as far north as places like Buffalo, Detroit,

and here in Chicago with slavers operating freely east of the Mississippi River, capturing even free black people

and shuttling them back south to be auctioned off into the brutal system of chattel slavery.

Luckily, the West was spared, the cruel business of slavery, and the peculiar institution was limited to south of the Mason-Dixon line

and east of the mighty Mississippi, which is what we are told

in history classes through the writing of historians who are greatly revered even seen

as national heroes, but that history is simply not true.

The West was not this place unscathed by slavery.

In fact, slavery was happening all over the West and not only to people of African descent.

And we erase that slavery from history with

Western novels and movies depicting the frontier west as full of opportunities to

prove your rough tough American individualistic self, perpetuating the myth of American

exceptionalism that is part of the foundation of white privilege and white supremacy.

And without recognizing and confronting that transcontinental nature of slavery and the South's worldwide

plans for slavery. White privilege and supremacy will continue to be with us for a very, very long
