Summary

The way we burn calories is constrained, not additive. This means that at a certain level of activity, our overall energy expenditure starts to plateau. What is the amount of activity in which doing more doesn't contribute to an increase in calorie expenditure? Shannon breaks that down in this episode. 0:00: Introduction 1:30: How we burn calories 5:10: A plateau of energy expenditure 6:18: Shannon’s energy expenditure examples 9:00: Sign that you’ve reached the energy plateau&nb...

Hello everyone welcome back to Fit Body Happy Joints. My name is Shannon. Today we're

0:05.6

going to talk about how much activity will contribute to your overall energy

0:09.2

expenditure or your metabolism before you start to hit a plateau. I am often talking about how

0:15.9

burning more calories from activity doesn't necessarily increase your

0:19.5

overall deficit because of something called the constrained total energy

0:22.9

expenditure model which I'll explain here in a moment. But I wanted to talk about how much

0:27.6

0:40.8

how I don't recommend to focus on burning calories in your workouts, but I also

0:45.0

think it's important to stay overall active.

0:48.8

0:57.6

I don't recommend just like doing your EFLO workout and then sitting and being stationary

1:01.8

for the rest of the day.

1:03.0

So in this podcast, I'll explain how we burn calories.

1:07.0

I'll go over that activity plateau, so how much activity you do

1:12.0

before your body tends to plateau. I'll give some examples of

1:15.0

activities for me personally in which I've hit that plateau and I'll give some

1:19.2

examples that we pulled from Payton as well. We'll go over why I don't recommend trying to burn all of your calories for the day in one consolidated session.

1:28.0

Then we'll discuss what happens if you go above that plateau, that activity plateau,

1:33.0

and when it can start to become problematic.

1:35.9

So hopefully this podcast answers a lot of your questions today.
