Eugenics is probably not the first word you thought you would hear me say this morning.

Trying to address all our social ills by determining who should and who should not have children was a phenomenon

that lasted far too long in the United States and especially in Virginia where its institutions

of sterilization were in operation for some 50 years during the 20th century.

From 1924 to 1979, Virginia was the site of thousands of sterilizations of those determined

defective, with many of those

sterilizations happening without the consent of the sterilized.

It was a cruel science that had no science behind it

and as our guest today argues this was not a product of its

time simply a misguided belief system guided by people who didn't know any better

eugenics was a science conducted by evil people who are continuing the Confederacy's

legacy of white supremacy.

Is it any wonder that the same state had such an expansive system of Eugenics would also

see the rise of the far right culminating in the deadly 2017 unite the right rally in

Charlottesville. Eugenics may be something that was abandoned with sterilization

becoming illegal in Virginia in the late 1970s, but its legacy
