It was a great age of immigration from Europe and in particular for Lutherans from Germany.

And what they found here when they came, especially the pastors, who found themselves on a

mission field, was a lot of German immigrants in a very sad state of affairs, not just sad state

affairs in terms of their living conditions, but also a sad state affairs in terms of

access to God's Word and to God's sacraments. And some took up the call and said,

we need to change this, and we need a real Lutheran presence as in Alters, Pulpets, and fonts

in pioneering America. Welcome back to Issues, et cetera. I'm Todd Wilken. One of those pioneers

and missionaries was 19th century Lutheran missionary, and the second president of the Lutheran

Church Missouri Synod, Friedrich Weeniken. Remember him on this day, May the 4th? Joining us

to do so, Dr. Robert Smith. He's electronic resource librarian at Concordia Theological Seminary,

Fort Wayne, Indiana, and he's authored a bio on Friedrich Weeniken for the Concordia Historical

Institute. Bob, welcome back. Thank you. What would you say, Friedrich Weeniken is principally

remembered for? Well, he's really remembered for two things. One is being a circuit writer or a

missionary on what was then the western frontier of the United States. We don't think of it that way,

Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, but at that time it was. He organized churches throughout the region

into what would eventually become the core of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

And he's also remembered as the second president of the Missouri Synod.
