Summary

Cynthia Bathurst, Ph.D., believes you can't have a safe neighborhood if it's not humane for its humans and animal residents. As head of Safe Humane Chicago and co-founder of D.A.W.G. (Dog Advisory Work Group), she started in her Lincoln Park neighborhood, with a global vision for humane communities worldwide. “I grew up with animals, friends and a loving family, knowing that animals, compassion and helping others was crucial to everyone's life. On a Chicago community policing ride-along, Cynthia witnessed a former neighbor die. The transformative experience drove her to organize to address the violence, abuse and neglect of humans and animals.

0:45.3	the whole story. Cynthia Batshurst is president and executive director for Safe Humane Chicago.
0:52.0	She co-founded Dog, D-A-W-G, Dog Advisory Work Group in 2000 and Safe Humane Chicago in 2007,
1:00.9	following a 25-year-long career in mathematics consulting. She received a Bachelor of Science in
1:06.9	Mathematics from the University of Alabama and a PhD in narrative English at the University of Iowa.
1:13.3	Cynthia serves as advisor to National K-9 Research Council and Vice Chair of Chicago's Commission on

1:28.4	recently that has you inspired and engaged. What I'm in the middle of right now is taking
1:36.2	safe humane Chicago, a nonprofit that I co-founded with some wonderful folks and now serve as
1:42.9	board president, executive director director to a level that
1:46.6	sustains the organization and becomes safe humane, maybe safe humane the world. And so I'm involved
1:54.2	in making sure that we've implemented everything here in Chicago, where we started, getting the programs in place and the people in
2:02.9	place to do that so that I can continue working with people in other cities, states, even
