0:00.0	In the Catholic Church since the 1970s, there's been a bit of a controversy, some misunderstanding, some hurt feelings about how to receive the Holy Eucharist.
0:13.0	The Eucharist is the very center of the church. As Catholics, we believe that the body and blood of Jesus Christ is present in the
0:25.5	Eucharist. It is the Eucharist. The bread and the wine are transubstantiated into the body,
0:31.2	blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus. And so as Catholics who believe this great mystery, we want to show our devotion, our reverence,
0:43.3	our penitence, and hopefully our humility in how we receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
0:52.2	And today we're going to talk about the history of kneeling for communion.
0:55.0	Admittedly, in the Eastern Church, they stand for communion. And one of our oldest
1:02.0	recorded witnesses to the reception of communion, St. Augustine, Doctor of the Church,
1:08.0	he talks about people standing for communion but making a bow before receiving
1:12.6	communion. However, in the Roman right, as time went on, people began to kneel for Holy Communion.
1:19.5	There's a very good reason for that. It is a development in the Roman right. And I myself personally
1:26.6	kneel down and receive on the tongue, and I'll
1:30.7	explain why I do that. But this controversy has been ignited once again by Bishop Martin in
1:39.5	Charlotte, North Carolina. You'll remember Bishop Martin. We covered him here on the Dr. Taylor Marshall
1:44.8	podcast. He said he was going to cancel the traditional Latin masses. They're in Charlotte,
1:51.9	of which there were several. He was going to move them out. He was buying a Protestant
1:55.4	property and was going to renovate it and put it outside the city and telling everyone
2:00.6	that wants
2:01.0	the traditional Latin Mass drive out there. There was public outcry. He has now delayed that
2:06.1	decision and said he's awaiting for any instructions from Pope Leo on that matter. But at the same
2:11.9	time, another document was leaked. And it showed that the liturgical plans of Bishop Martin, not just for the traditional
2:20.2	Latin Mass, but also for the novice Ordo included not kneeling, no candles on the altar.
