And today I'm joined again by Josie Lewis, the Putschior Head Gardner, who has been with us quite a few times on the podcast.

It's one of those subjects that I've got to be honest

because I'm passionate about cut flowers and production.

Shade has never been my friend

because of course, most of the plants I love to grow, annuals.

Annials make their food from the sun, from photosynthesis,

and so they do not thrive in shade and they get long and leggy

and reach their necks out to any light that they can find.

But I've grown up, and with growing up, I've realised that every garden has a rid of shade

and unless you're going to brick it up to the north face of your house or lawn it I suppose

or put box or you topery which is what we have done in the past on the north side of the garden

We've got a nice shady area behind the barn, which gets a lot of shade, doesn't it?

Yeah, it's mossy.

And it gets about an hour of sun in the middle of June on the longest day of the year. And that's about it.
