The police were careful to go through all the proper channels to get a search warrant and went

through Colton's apartment. The kitchen sparkled and was in direct contrast to the rooms that

were in disarray. They had wiped the kitchen down, but Colton did not run the dishwasher,

which contained a machete, entwined with hair and blood.

They found a knife, which had blood on the blade,

and was engraved with the proud family business tagline of,

Brandt, the most trusted name and farm implements since 1913, a division of

Potoniac Machinery Corporation. There were two bullet cartridges in the couch by Colton's

living room. Detectives found a receipt with items purchased from a hardware store. They went to the

hardware store to track down the surveillance footage, which showed

Colton at the checkout. The manager at the hardware store watched the video with the

detectives and easily remembered the kid who looked stoned, smelled like booze, and who intended

to cut up a frozen turkey with a hacksaw. They found a receipt from Burger King, dated on the day Jennifer

disappeared. It was a meal for $6.16. Coke fries and a burger with no onions. The prosecutor
