President-elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnik,

as Secretary of Commerce. That's according to two sources familiar with the process,

and we'll tell you a little bit more about him in our 3 p.m. episode of Five Things.

It comes, as there are reports Trump has been calling senators directly to lobby them to confirm

his pick for Attorney General, former representative Matt Gates. That's even as counterpressure grows

from some GOP Senators who want to see a House Ethics Committee report into Gates's past conduct,

including an alleged sexual liaison with a minor. And a lawyer for two women who appeared before the

committee says they testified they were paid for, quote, sexual favors by the Florida Republican.

Gates has denied all those allegations. Meanwhile, in his first public

comments since Gates's selection, outgoing Attorney General Merrick Garland told career prosecutors

that they are the backbone of the DOJ. I may be coming to the end of my tenure at the

Justice Department, but I know that all of you will continue, you will continue

in the department's mission, what has always been its mission, to uphold the rule of law,

to keep our country safe, and to protect civil rights.

In a major escalation, Ukraine has reportedly fired U.S.-made longer-range missiles into Russia.

Moscow says six ballistic missiles were fired across the border, and they were all destroyed

or damaged by Russian air defenses.

Kiev did not immediately respond to the report.
