The Israeli military says it carried out a special operation overnight,

pounding the southern Gaza city of Rafa with airstrikes

to rescue two male hostages.

The Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza says at least 94 people were killed in the overnight Israeli strikes.

The ministry says that number is expected to increase,

as it's still retrieving and identifying bodies.

CNN cannot independently verify that number.

Those casualties are only adding to the growing concerns

over the fate of more than a million displaced Gazans in Rafa,

where Israel is planning a ground operation.
