The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Alberto formed in the Gulf of Mexico this morning,

with winds of 40 miles an hour.

It's not expected to make landfall in Mexico until tonight, but it's already

lashing the coast of Texas with high winds, bursts of heavy rain, and storm surge.

Elsewhere in the country, firefighters are hoping rainfall and a break from the wind will start to help them fight wildfires.

New Mexico officials say one person has died and 1,400 structures have been destroyed by a wildfire near the village of Ruodoso. This man was one of the 8,000 people who had to evacuate.
