July 16th Republicans are gathering today in Milwaukee for the second day of the

Republican National Convention, and the theme is Make America

Safe Once Again.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Senator J.D. Vance were formally nominated last night as the GOP ticket for the

2024 presidential race.

Many VP contenders, like North Dakota Governor Doug Bergum and Florida Senator Marco Rubio Rubio were left in the dark for weeks.

CNN's Elena Trine has more reporting on why Trump ultimately chose Vance.

I'm told one of the top reasons is that the two have chemistry so that's part of it.

The other part is that Donald Trump and the Trump campaign itself actually believe

that Vance will appeal very well with some of the rust-belt working-class

voters that they think they need to win over to win the election.

Also, sources say Trump had been getting a bunch of calls from people like Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, and his son Don Jr. before he announced his pick, all urging him to go with Vance in the final hours. A source familiar with today's

scheduled tells CNN Trump's former primary rivals, Nicky Haley and Ron

DeSantis are slated to speak today, along with Rubio and reality TV stars Savannah Chrisley.

Videos from witnesses at the rally in Pennsylvania show people in the crowd noticed the

gunman on the roof of a nearby building almost two minutes before shots were fired in an assassination

attempt on former President Trump.

CNN synced footage from witnesses and the official video feed of the rally and found at least 1 minute and 57 seconds

passed between people noticing the gunman and the sound of gunfire. The

assassination attempt was a major failure for the secret Service and it's creating tension between the agency and local law enforcement.

Both say it was the other's job to secure the building where the gunman was.
