Hello from CNN, I'm Chris Debeau with the five things you need to know for Friday, January 5th.

As the fighting in Gaza rages on, the question of the Strip's future continues to divide,

not just on the international stage, but also within the Israeli government.

Yesterday, Israel's defense minister outlined what could happen in Gaza after the war,

saying it should no longer be controlled by Hamas and without Israeli civilian

presence.

Now the finance minister says he disagrees with that plan.

CNN's Nick Robertson is more from Tel Aviv.

The finance minister, Belzel Smotrich,

hardliner within Neknyahoo's governing coalition,

has said that he thinks the day after looks

just like the day before.

He thinks that there should be more imaginative

out-of-the-box thinking such as the migration of people from Gaza to other

places. This is something of course that has caused considerable pushback and

has been put down very clearly by the US State Department. However, that is a clear

rift when you have a cabinet member saying the defense ministers got this all wrong.

Today is going to feel a little like 20-20 deja vu.

Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are making their cases for a second stint in the White House.

Biden's delivering a speech to kick off his 2024 campaign by calling Trump a threat to democracy,

while the former president is heading to Iowa, where his top Republican opponents decided

it's finally time to come for him.
