The largest healthcare worker strike in U. in US history is underway.

We have a crisis inside, a staffing crisis that affects us and subsequently affects our patients.

That was a staff member on a picket line in Virginia,

just one of the more than 75,000 workers

at Kaiser Permanente locations there,

and across California, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Washington, D.C.

Both sides failed to reach a new deal on pay and staffing levels and talks last week.

The eight unions involved in the strike represent different types of workers, including EMTs, nurses, respiratory therapists, and support staff.

The not-for-profit health care firm says it has contingency plans, and that 60% of staffers would

still be working in the event of a strike.

The unions say workers plan to be off the job through early this Saturday, with plans for a longer

strike in November if they don't get a new contract.

The House has ousted its speaker in a historic move this week.

After eight House Republicans sided with Democrats to remove Congressman Kevin McCarthy from

that top job, the House is an uncharted territory.
